One of the biggest attractions near Cancun is Xcaret Ecopark which is visited by scores of people a day and highly advertised in the area. I was a little unsure of going for that very exact reason. Would it be good if it was the ‘obvious choice’ and would it just be like visiting a sunny version of London Zoo?
Well I certainly felt like a proper tourist for this day, picked up in a tour bus, herded into the park, told what time to be back by and all that normal shenanigans that usually irritates the hell out of me. When we arrived it was kind of similar to arriving at Disney World or Discovery Cove in Florida. You get a map of the park and you wonder how on earth you will fit everything into the nominal amount of hours you have been issued. After checking in to your locker and getting your snorkling equipment you ponder where in this exotic mini paradise to explore first. The choice is mind boggling, you can snorkel around the bay, swim with dolphins, sharks, turtles head into underwater rivers or sip on a cool drink watching the big cats. I really can’t imagine that any member of the family wouldn’t be amused here. I was extremely impressed with the organisation, the staff and the quality of all activities.
In particular the staff at the nursing shark pool were just fantastic. We madly decided, O.K my man decided that it would be a good idea to hold and swim with sharks. I was completely astounded by these animals there speed and power is unimaginable until seen by your very own eyes. The sheer power of their strike for food (whilst laid out on our knees!) made me jump with the force whilst all I could think was, “If they smell my fear will they eat me next?”. The staff here to help were so patient, so respectful of the nurse sharks, obviously very knowledgeable about the species and sharks in general and were just such good fun.
Here we are in action (note my forced smile!)
Here are some of my shots from the trip:
The parrot picture was actually Dan’s photo which I adore!
Today’s theme is Something Yellow for FMS Photo a Day Challenge and so the butterfly photo is my entry for the theme, I hope you enjoy! Oh and go to Xcaret!
Thanks for reading,
Roxy

I tried to leave a comment before but it didn’t work. Maybe I was too shocked by the sharks! I don’t know if I would have the guts to sit and let sharks feast off my lap! You sure did not just lounge around in the hotel!
I love love that something yellow photo. It’s so vibrant with different intense yellows – such a unique photo, so beautiful. Is the butterfly on a slice of lemon? Somehow looks more like a slice of yellow orange (doesn’t that read funny lol). Absolutely gorgeous and cheering!
Thanks! Very well spotted it is a yellow orange :-/ I could have just taken photos for the whole day the place is just so vibrant and colourful. Looking back I can’t believe I did it either but notice who I put near the sharp end!
I’d love to swim with Dolphins and Sharks and so would my kids – what a cracking place
I would totally recommend doing it one day, one to add to the bucket list! I am not sure it will be something we will be doing when we have a family.
